100 years ago, 1912
The Lewiston Board of Trade and the Lewiston Merchants’ Association journeyed to Casco Castle Wednesday on their annual outing. The Lewiston Chamber of Commerce came back. At their meeting on the shores of Casco Bay they formed a temporary organization, but the enthusiasm was so keen and the interest so great that there can hardly be any hitch to the forming of a permanent association of that nature.
50 years ago, 1962
The Lewiston Recreation Department has added a new game to its already long list of summer playground activities. Golf will be enjoyed by a number of playground participants in cooperation with the Prospect Hill Golf Course in Auburn. A nine-hole course, Prospect hill has been made available to the department for use by the youngsters on Monday mornings. Lincoln Playground was named the “playground of the week” for the past week.
25 years ago, 1987
Unlike most police officers, who prefer to be on patrol instead of behind a desk, Androscoggin County sheriff’s deputy Eilean Hewison prefers her work at the county jail to being on patrol. “I found corrections more interesting,“ she said. “You’re dealing with people more. Constantly. There are the bookings, the inmates, the visitors. You don’t get to see as many people when you are on the road.” At 22, she is not only the youngest person ever to make sergeant in the Androscoggin Sheriff’s Office, but she is also the first female sergeant in the Corrections Division.
