OXFORD — The recreation committee member accused of firing a little league coach and calling children on the team “worthless” at a June 20 baseball game is up for reappointment at the July 19 meeting. His term ended June 30.

Gary Smith disputed almost everything he was accused of saying by parents at the June 21 meeting, and said he merely had an argument with Randy Mills, who coaches the Oxford White Sox.

Several parents complained at the June 21 meeting that Smith had insulted their children when arguing with Mills.

At the July 5 meeting of the Oxford Board of Selectmen, the board and Town Manager Michael Chammings spoke to Smith in a lengthy executive session. Smith quickly left the meeting after about half an hour. The executive session continued for several minutes afterward. The board took no action.

Town Clerk Ellen Morrison said Smith has applied for reappointment to the board. The board will consider appointments for the Recreation Committee, the Appeals Board, the Planning Board and Budget Committee at the July 19 meeting. The board will vote on whether to reappoint each member and whether to appoint new applicants.
