BATES ATHLETE HAS QUALIFIED AT OLYMPICS IN STOCKHOLM. Vaughn S. Blanchard Finished Second in Sixth Heat in Hurdles. At the resumption of the Olympic games today in Stockholm, Sweden, the members of the United States team added some further points to their score. The United States team had the hurdles race all its own way, taking eight firsts and one second. According to the Bates College yearbook, Blanchard, Class of 1912, received a rousing sendoff by more than 200 members of the Bates community on June 11. The track men presented him with a silver loving cup and the student body made up a purse to show their enthusiasm. At Stockholm, the 6-foot, 1-inch 165-pound Blanchard placed 15th in 110-meter hurdles, with an estimated heat time of 16.0 seconds.

The Lewiston Fire Department answered a total of 59 alarms during the month of June, it was learned today. According to the monthly report of the department, the total is slightly higher than the corresponding month a year ago. The month of June found the firemen answering 17 calls for fire, 12 calls for matters other than fire, 21 public service calls and four that were needless. The calls included one three-alarm blaze.

Members of the Androscoggin County Jail Committee Tuesday formed two subcommittees in anticipation of a fall campaign in support of an $8.9 million jail improvement project. Up to five lawmakers were invited to join the committee last week. The invitation came in response to earlier complaints that the county legislative delegation hadn’t been kept abreast of progress toward a fall referendum.
