PARIS — The Sebago-Long Lake Music Festival, celebrating its 40th anniversary season, will present a “Stories in Music” concert at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School on Thursday, July 26.

Musicians will also take the stage at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church in Bridgton on Sunday, July 29, for the festival’s “Discover the Joys of Live Music” concert. 

“Stories in Music” is being presented by the SLLMF in conjunction with the LOOK summer program for children. Audience members will get to listen to musical stories performed by cellist Eliot Bailen and flutist Susan Rotholz and then have a chance to create their own.

Bailen and Rotholz, longtime SLLMF artists, live in New York City, where they are well-known not only for their performances with various chamber and orchestral groups, but also for the successful creative program for young people called “From Song to Symphony.” 

“Discover the Joys of Live Music” is an hourlong program designed for ages 6 to 96. It will feature short classical selections for combinations of flute and strings by Mozart, Boccherini, Debussy and Ginastera — and perhaps a musical story from the Bailen-Rotholz team. 

The five-week SLLMF, based at Deertrees Theatre in Harrison, covers a variety of musical tastes: classical to modern, trios to small chamber orchestra, strings, piano, voice, woodwinds and brass, plus Jewish and Russian folk tunes, and a little ragtime.

Musicians are principal players in orchestras from Maine to California, recording artists and performers in festivals across the country and abroad.

Performing at the St. Peter’s concert, besides Bailen and Rotholz, will be Timothy Lees, concertmaster of the Cincinnati Symphony; Philip Palermo, associate concertmaster of the Indianapolis Symphony; Laurie Kennedy, principal violist of the Portland Symphony Orchestra; Bonnie Thron, principal cellist of the North Carolina Symphony Orchestra. 

Tickets to the “Stories in Music” concert at 1 p.m. Thursday, July 26, at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School are $2/$4. LOOK participants and their families admitted free. The “Discover the Joys of Live Music” concert at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 29, at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, 41 Sweden Road, Bridgton, is free; donations accepted.
