VFW post to meet today

LEWISTON — The Longley-Dionne VFW Post 9150 will hold their monthly meeting at 6 p.m. Monday, July 16, at the Lewiston Armory. Entrance is at the rear of the building.

All officers and members are encouraged to attend.

Bridge Club winners named

LEWISTON — The Lewiston-Auburn Social Bridge Club winners at the Lewiston Armory on July 9 were as follows: first, Larry Fortier and Roger Labbe; second, Helen Little and Rosemarie Goodwin; third, Cindy Kirchherr and Jim Krainin; fourth, Linda Leotsakos and Henry Lerette.

The Lewiston-Auburn Duplicate BC winners on July 11 were: first, Hazel Glazier and Nancy Farmer; second/third tie, Patricia Quinn and Richard Balian with Nancy Lindgren and Leslie Lord; fourth, Jeanine Kivus and Fred Letourneau; fifth, Larry Fortier and Roger Labbe.

Winners at Schooner Estates on July 12 were: first, Fred Letourneau and Mike Quinn; second, Jeanine Kivus and David Lock; third, Claire Lyons and Rosemarie Goodwin.

Hacker’s Hill walk/run

CASCO — The Hacker’s Hill four-mile Preservation Walk and Run will take place Saturday, Aug. 11, raising funds for Loon Echo’s newest preserve.

Hacker’s Hill in Casco has been the focus of the organization’s campaign efforts; just over $150,000 remains to meet the $800,000 selling price and establish a permanent endowment.

The course for the first-ever event will have runners and walkers striding uphill on Quaker Ridge Road, finally ending atop Hacker’s Hill with stunning views of the mountains and lakes. The cost to runners and walkers is $20 per adult, $15 for children and youth.

Registration starts at 7:30 a.m. and runners will take off at 8:30 a.m., with walkers to follow. All proceeds will go to the protection and stewardship of Hacker’s Hill.

Grant benefits Good Shepherd

AUBURN — The Northeast chapter of the Dunkin’ Donuts & Baskin-Robbins Community Foundation recently provided a $50,000 grant to regional food banks across the northeast, including the Good Shepherd Food Bank.

This grant will be used to feed children in Maine experiencing food insecurity, by funding a new Backpack Program in an Augusta elementary school for the 2012-13 school year. It will provide necessary funding for food and supplies to feed up to 40 kids on weekends and school vacations for one school year. This will be the first Backpack Program school in Augusta.

Library holding Appy Hour

AUBURN — It seems that everyone and everything has an app nowadays including Smokey the Bear. Fun, informational and just plain cool, apps can be found for anything. Patrons at the Auburn Public Library talk and share apps during the monthly Appy Hour.

The next Appy Hour will be held at 6 p.m. Monday, July 23. Five fun and low-costs apps will be highlighted. Those with a device are invited to bring it and take advantage of the library’s Internet access to download a favorite app.

The event will take place in the air-conditioned Androscoggin Community Room and is free. Light refreshments and food will be provided.

Amvets Post 6 flea market

Clothing Center open Wednesdays

TURNER — The Community Clothing Center on the town green in North Turner is open each Wednesday night from 6 to 8 p.m. The clothing ranges from babies to both adult men and women and is reasonably priced for everyone.

About the middle of August, the center will begin putting out fall and winter clothes. Donations for school-aged children would be very appreciated. They can be dropped off on any Wednesday night or left on the porch of the center.

A special sale will be held from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday, July 28, featuring upscale clothing including slacks, dresses, jackets and other office quality outfits. These items will be tagged between $1 and $10 per item and there will be no bag prices as on Wednesdays.
