LEWISTON — In observance of Nursing Home Week, May 13 to 19, St. Mary’s d’Youville Pavilion held a series of events to celebrate the lives and relationships of residents, families and staff. The theme of the week was “Celebrating the Journey.”

“Our residents have lived full lives and we want to honor each and every person who has allowed us to journey with them,” said Phil Jean, vice president of Elder Care Services at St. Mary’s Health System and administrator at d’Youville. “This is a perfect opportunity to involve families, community members, youth and others in our community who share our respect for the elderly and disabled who live among us.”

D’Youville Pavilion took a journey through the decades with residents through events such as a 1930s Mother’s Day Tea and beano. Another day featured 1940s attire, trivia and a 1940s version of The Price is Right. The 1950s were celebrated with poodle skirts, root beer floats at the “Malt Shoppe” and an evening with Elvis; The 1960s were marked with bell bottoms, tie dyes and a game of 1960s bingo; a dance party with a disco ball recalled the 1970s; Friday featured big hair and parachute pants for the 1980s-inspired Alumni Day.

The end of the week was celebrated with a barbecue on the patio for residents, patients, former patients, family members and staff.

National Nursing Home Week is an annual observance sponsored nationally by the American Health Care Association.
