NEW GLOUCESTER — Vandals burned to the ground a portable toilet at the Rowe Station Road recreation field, adding to a series of destructive incidents at the site over the years, selectmen learned on Monday.

Town Manager Sumner Field III told the board that the State Police are looking into the matter but have not found a suspect in this most recent event that took place sometime last week.

The field is located off a gated entrance where town ball fields are not visible from the roadway, out of sight from public view.

“They have burned down the old snack shack and bleachers over the years,” Field said.

The Bald Hill Road recreation fields visible from the road have been free from vandalism, he said.

A replacement Porta-Potty will not be brought in, Field said, who apologized to the public.

In other business, the board awarded bids on sand and gravel purchases.

M-T Pit of New Gloucester will provide winter sand at $2.50 per yard plus labor and fuel for a total cost of $50.77 for a 12-yard load.

Portland Sand will provide sub-base gravel for $5 per yard and base gravel at $5 per yard.

Pike Industries will provide standard surface at $7.49 per yard and the Maine Department of Transportation surface at $8.96 per yard.

In other business, Selectman Nat Berry IV’s draft policy to regulate the use of cellular phones from disrupting and interfering with public meetings in New Gloucester facilities will go to the Maine Municipal Association for review before the board takes action.

The policy calls for selectmen, committee and board members and staff to either turn their cellphones off or place them on vibrate mode and be kept on a person instead of being left on a table.

A person taking any cell call or text message would be required to excuse themselves from the meeting and conduct a conversation or text message outside of the meeting area.

In addition, members of the public attending the public meetings would be asked to place their phones on vibrate or turn them off.

Signs would be posted at town meeting places instructing citizens of restrictive cellular phone use.
