JAY — A Livermore man who was arrested Monday pleaded guilty Wednesday to operating under the influence and assault, according to Farmington court documents. He was accused of kicking a Jay police officer in the leg and spitting in his face and in the cruiser.

Allen Buzzell, 23, was a sentenced to serve seven days in Franklin County jail in Farmington with credit for time served. He also was ordered to pay a $700 fine and received a three-year suspension of his driver’s license, documents state. He also was ordered to pay a $300 fine on the assault charge.

Buzzell was arrested Monday on charges of operating under the influence, assault and criminal mischief after police followed up on complaints, Jay police detective Richard Caton IV said.

Police had a complaint of an erratic driver on BJ’s Lane, off Route 140, which was followed by a complaint from Hannaford’s on an uncooperative shoplifter, Caton said.

Sgt. Troy Young responded to Hannaford’s at Jay Plaza and made contact with Buzzell.

Young confirmed with Buzzell that he had driven his truck alone to the store, Caton said.

Young arrested him on the charges and drove him to the jail in Farmington. Police said Buzzell spit all over the cruiser on the ride. Once at the jail, Young had to take Buzzell to Franklin Memorial Hospital for a mental health evaluation, Caton said.

After the visit, Buzzell kicked Young in the left leg and spit in his face, he said.

The state did not go forward on the criminal mischief charge. Young ended up cleaning up the cruiser and decontaminating it.
