Adam Wilding, right, explains to Lt. Mark Boulet of the Auburn Fire Department that the machine pumping smoke through the sewer line along Turner Street in Auburn is the cause of concern for a nearby resident. Wilding, an engineer with Weston and Sampson, and crews from the Auburn Water and Sewer District will be sending smoke through 80,000 feet of sewer mains over the next three weeks to detect leaks in sewer lines. Smoke could seep into homes from dry traps in forgotten basement drains or unused showers or sinks, Wilding said. People who find smoke in their homes during testing should contact the company at 207-795-7641, extension 2112. From left are Auburn Water and Sewer District interns Ben Armstrong, Kevin Costello, Boulet and Wilding.
