LEWISTON — Florien “Charlie” A. Lapointe, 96, a former resident of Main Street, Jay, died early Wednesday, July 18, at d’Youville Pavilion, where he had resided for the past year. He previously had resided for the past 10 years at Montello Heights also in Lewiston.

He was born Aug. 27, 1915, in Livermore Falls, the son of Adelard and Claire (Berube) Lapointe. Charlie was a graduate of St. Rose School in Jay and a 1934 graduate of Livermore Falls High School. He served in the U.S. Army as a mail clerk for the 191st Battalion in Field Artillery in the European Theatre during World War II.

On Sept. 1, 1945, at St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay, he married his wife of 66 years, Marie Ducheney of Jay. Charlie worked for IP in Jay as foreman of the converting and shipping department. He retired after 44 years of service.

Charlie was appointed by Gov. Ed Muskie to Probation Officer for Franklin County and elected Tax Collector for the town of Jay. He was a communicant of St. Rose of Lima Church in Jay, serving as a eucharistic minister, lecturer, and server at funeral Masses.

He was a member of the IP Quarter Century Club, a 4th Degree member of the Knights of Columbus, the Frank L. Mitchell VFW Post 3335 in Jay, Toastmasters Club, Holy Cross Cemetery Association Committee and served as chairman for the Jay-Livermore Falls Senior Citizens.

Following Charlie’s retirement, he enjoyed playing golf, bowling, traveling and writing. Charlie will long be remembered for his endearing wit, the gift of storytelling, his gentleness and quirkiness, his passion for reading, learning and keeping up with current events. He was a man of strong faith, and always had a kind word for everyone. He was also an avid Red Sox and Celtics fan. He touched many people with his admirable attributes.

He is survived by his wife, Marie Lapointe of Lewiston; his sons, Bernard C. Lapointe and his wife, Kathleen, of Bedford, N.H., Raymond Lapointe of Clinton, Mass., and Michael Lapointe of Allenstown, N.H.; daughter-in-law, Janet Lapointe of Spokane, Wash.; grandchildren, Michael J. Lapointe and his wife, Maura, of Deerfield, N.H., Aimee B. Lapointe and fiancé, Philip Gath, of Dracut, Mass., Seth Brown and his wife, Haruna Sasaki, of Tamuning, Guam, Ian Lapointe and his wife, Ana Maria, of Clinton, Mass., and William Lapointe of Spokane, Wash.; two great-grandchildren, Emilie Lapointe of Clinton, Mass., and Matthew Lapointe of Deerfield, N.H.; also many nieces and nephews.

He was predeceased by his son, Richard “Rick” W. Lapointe; his granddaughter, Lisa M. Lapointe; five sisters; and seven brothers.
