FARMINGTON — A local man pleaded guilty Friday to going door-to-door collecting donations while saying he was acting on behalf of the Salvation Army on Thursday when he was not.

Farmington police Sgt. Edward Hastings IV arrested Kristopher Freemantle, 19, of Farmington on Thursday on a charge of theft by deception.

Justice Michaela Murphy sentenced Freemantle to 48 hours in jail with credit for time served and ordered him to pay a $100 fine.

Someone alerted police Thursday that something wasn’t right about Freemantle’s claim, Farmington police secretary Bonnie Pomeroy said prior to Freemantle appearing in Franklin County Superior Court.

Freemantle already had gone to four houses and collected a small amount of donations when police caught up with him, she said.

Police returned the money collected to those who had donated.
