“Firefighting was a lot different 33 years ago,” said Phil Allen of Farmington, center, with clock. Allen has retired as a firefighter from the Farmington Fire Department. The entire department made a surprise visit to his house, trucks and lights and all, to present him with a commemorative, locally-made clock. When asked why he initially joined the department, he said, “At that time, the department was short on drivers so I drove a truck and operated the pump on a 10-acre forest fire behind the old shoe shop. Then Doug Oliver handed me a paper to sign and I was officially signed up.” The next fire he went to was in New Vineyard. He and the other firefighters just made it out of the house as the second floor with the heavy water bed came crashing down. “I almost wore a water bed” he said. “We were very fortunate to have Phil as a firefighter for 33 years,” Chief Terry Bell. Deputy Chief Clyde Ross said. “He was completely dedicated”
