President Barack Obama wants to examine Mitt Romney’s qualifications but has been stonewalled, just as Romney’s Republican primary opponents were in the spring.

Bain Capital is a private corporation with very limited reporting requirements. We know that Romney was the creator, sole owner, CEO, president, and sole decider until February 1999. After that, the story is very confused.

Depending on the circumstances, Romney was all the above or retroactively retired, not responsible, went to board meetings, or had no involvement at all. Romney won’t release his own tax returns beyond two years.

His stealth campaign is wedded now to his smear campaign against President Obama.

Romney said recently that Obama was “foreign.” John Sununu, Romney’s surrogate, said that Obama must “learn to be an American.”

The charge that Obama is using a fraudulent Social Security number appeared in the Sun Journal’s reader comments section recently. Almost 100 smears are circulating that Obama is somehow not an American. All have been debunked. They share one idea: that no African-American can legitimately be president of the United States.

Why has the Romney campaign become so desperate that it will descend into xenophobic smears of the president?
