DEAR SUN SPOTS: I hope you can find out something for me. I was watching the LPGA, and the announcer said the new player in the pros was Tiger Woods’ niece. I was led to believe Tiger was an only child. How can he have a niece? Thank you. — Gilda, Auburn

AUBURN: Ah, the tangled web of blended families. Here’s the explanation: Tiger’s father, Earl Woods Sr. had another son before he married Tiger’s mother. The son from that marriage, Earl Woods Jr., has a daughter, Cheyenne, who is playing golf like her famous “half uncle.”

Tiger was born in 1975; Cheyenne in 1990. According to golf.about.com, Earl Sr. introduced her to golf as he did with Tiger.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: I am an avid reader living on Social Security. After paying my bills and caring for my two cats, I have little left over for books. I go to the library in the summer, and I try to buy at garage sales when I can to save up for winter reading.

I enjoy new fiction books the most, along with biographies, medical, animal stories and books about living in Maine or other states in the early 1700s and 1800s.

If any of your readers have any of these types to sell cheap, I would be grateful. When done, I would donate them to others I know who have this same problem. Thank you. — D., Auburn, 330-4751

ANSWER: Sun Spots expects you will be inundated with responses. The book market continues to decline, so you should be able to get your fill of winter reading very reasonably.

Also, as you may know, both the Lewiston and Auburn libraries sell extra books, as well as lending for free.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Can you list the phone numbers or names of piano teachers in the Turner area? — melanmetoo@netzero.com

ANSWER: Sun Spots does not have a current listing of those. She checked her records and noted you asked this question last year, too. Apparently learning piano is one more thing people just don’t do as often as they used to.

DEAR SUN SPOTS: Recently there was a letter in Sun Spots from someone requesting handmade quilts. We no longer have the column, but would like to contribute if there is still a need. We would need to know how to get in touch with the contact person to get the details. Thank you. — Louise 784-8032, Mimilougriff@aol.com

ANSWER: Sun Spots reviewed her letters for the last couple of months and found one that might be what you had in mind.
