NORWAY — Ashley Blake of Norway, a senior at Oxford Hills Comprehensive High School, has joined the Oxford County Democrats as the first student intern to their campaign team. Ashley has been volunteering since the Norway office opened in late June and recently completed the application for intern status.

To date, she has participated in phone banks and in the varied activities at the Norway Art Fair, and has assisted in setting up the office. In her application, Ashley stated, “My teacher at Oxford Hills recommended political volunteering to me at the end of my junior year and I was ready to jump in and learn! I thought it would be a great experience to get to know people and to develop some great skills.”

She is looking for other students interested in Democratic politics to join her.

Interns have the opportunity to learn through first hand participation in the political process. The program is intended to provide knowledge, skills, and experience that each intern can apply to future challenges and professional pursuits. There are four levels for summer internships ranging from 5 to 30 hours per week. Weekend participation is possible once school starts. The application process involves filling out a brief application form and completing an interview. Opportunities currently are available at the Norway and Mexico offices.

The Oxford County Democrats interns are affiliated with the state-wide Maine Democratic Party internship program. Anyone interested in participating in the Oxford County program may call Cathy Newell, 875-2116 or email cathyn@megalink.net.
