LEWISTON — Maine’s amateur technophiles will get an additional week to register for a Sept. 8 Maker Faire hosted by Museum L-A.

Twelve people had applied to be part of Maine’s first Maker Faire, Museum L-A Executive Director Rachel Desgrosseilliers said. Another 20 had expressed interest but had not completed their applications.

“We have quite a few people in the works, but they haven’t finalized their plans yet,” she said.

The original deadline for the fair was 5 p.m. Friday, July 27.

“We’ll have a meeting next Friday, and we should know all who are coming then,” Desgrosseilliers said.

She said she’s had interest from makers in Lewiston-Auburn and Portland and even from Massachusetts.

Maine’s Eepybird — Fritz Grobe and Stephen Voltz of Buckfield — are scheduled to perform at the fair. The pair gained international fame in 2006 with their Diet Coke and Mentos experiments.

Voltz is a member of the Maker Faire organizing committee.

The event is scheduled for Sept. 8 in the Bates Mill atrium. People wanting to host a display at the Lewiston-Auburn event should register at the website, makerfairelewistonauburn.com.

A maker faire is a convention and show for amateur technophiles, hobbyists and do-it-yourselfers. It brings inventors, crafters and science buffs together to show off their projects and have fun with interactive displays, games and demonstrations.

The first maker faire was held in California in 2005. The 2011 edition had more than 100,000 attendees and featured presentations by Adam Savage of “Mythbusters” and Eepybird.

The events are supported by MAKE Magazine and O’Reilly Publishing.

Since the inaugural event, organizers have sponsored similar fairs in cities around the world, including Detroit, Boston, New York and London.

They also support smaller “mini” fairs designed for between 300 and 6,000 attendees. The museum plans to host a medium-sized mini-faire, with room for up to 50 displays.
