Joseph Witonis did not appear in the Auburn Municipal Court, Friday morning, to explain just exactly why he took the front door off a store owned by him but rented to J.A. Bernard or why he removed a window from the same establishment while Bernard was trying to carry on a business there, but it may be conjectured that he took this original way to make the tenant pay more rent. Bernard when on the stand testified that Witonis had come in and mumbled something in a foreign tongue about rent, it was presumed. At any rate, a misunderstanding ensued and in a short time Witonis appeared with two assistants and removed the front door leading onto the street. Even later he came and took out a show window.

Residents of Ventura Street, Lewiston, tired of waiting for the city to take action on filling a dangerous water hole between Ventura and Fair streets, have taken the situation into their own hands. One youngster of the vicinity nearly drowned, according to reports. The “pond” is located between houses facing both Ventura and Fair streets. Workmen of Longchamps and Son. contractors tore up a couple of lawns to lay 130 feet of 4-inch drain pipe to the city catch basin on Ventura Street. The Lewiston Fire Department aided by sending equipment to pump the hole dry. No estimate of the cost, to be shared by residents of the area, was available.
