AUBURN — Marie Cecile Mercier, 90, a resident of Clover Health Care Facility and formerly of Lewiston, passed away on Sunday, July 22, following a long illness.

She was born in Lewiston, June 15, 1922, the daughter of the late Omer and Armosa (Dubois) Mathieu. She was a fancy stitcher for several years at local shoe factories, until her retirement.

Marie enjoyed making puzzles, playing cards with her sisters and brothers, playing bingo and spending family time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

She will be sadly missed by all who enjoyed her great sense of humor and her infectious smile and gentleness.

She is survived by three daughters, Pauline Gallant and her husband, Bernard, of Winthrop, Shirley Messler and her friend, Mitchell Buczek, of Merritt Island, Fla., and Sandra LaFratta and her husband, Thomas, of Bridgewater, Mass.; one son, Paul Mercier and his wife, Deborah, of Gardiner; three sisters, Irene Gauthier and Carmen Goupil, both of Lewiston and Pauline Bernier and her husband, Victor, of Arcadia, Fla.; five brothers, Jean Paul Mathieu and his wife, Alma, of Lewiston, Marcel Mathieu and his wife, Irene, of Lewiston and Meza, Ariz., Jerry Mathieu and his wife, Jacqueline of Lewiston, Maurice Mathieu and his wife, Gemma, of Fall River, Mass., and Rene Mathieu and his wife, Pauline, of Fayette; eight grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

She was predeceased by her husband, Armand A. Mercier, whom she married on Sept. 27, 1943, and who died on Aug. 28, 1987; and her brother, Armand Mathieu.
