“Is it possible that there is no opposition to this change in the routes for the State road?” asked State Highway Commissioner Parker L. Hardison as a hearing took place in the office of C.E. Williams, Auburn mayor. Only a few attended to speak regarding the matter of changing the State road from the present route along the River Road to Center Street, East Auburn Road and the Pettingill Road, and to this there was not a word of opposition. The Danville Junction route and the proposed route which does away with the crossing of the Maine Central tracks in one instance, met with general approval when presented next.
50 years ago, 1962
Lewiston Public Works Director George J. Maher today said that his department is “far from finished” with the work along the Pinewoods Road on the outskirts of the city. The department is spending about $12,000 on the little-used gravel road. The project includes widening of the road, straightening out of some curves and the lowering of grades before the new road is regraveled. Maher said the department has done most of the rough grading and has been doing some blasting to get rid of ledge jutting out into the road.

What do the words, “I can read your mind and you should be ashamed,” mean? Many people who walk by Packard’s Pharmacy at 68 Court St. in Auburn see messages such as this each day and try to decipher the meaning. Richard Campbell, owner for 17 years, and his son Jeff have been putting up a new message every day or two for the past four years. “We try to put up messages that interest people and that will make them smile,” he said. “We like to announce special events like birthdays and anniversaries, as well as Edward Little High School sports schedules. Campbell’s favorite signs are those that announce the success of something in town.
