TOGUS — Russell Stanley Herbert, 57, of Oxford, died Friday at the Maine VA Healthcare Center.

He was born in Laconia, N.H., on July 28, 1954, the son of Raymond and Simone Valliere Herbert.

On July 11, 2009, he married Kristin Ellen Elliott, and they renewed their vows as a sacrament in the Catholic Church on Feb. 4, 2012.

Russell had worked many years for the U.S. government, retiring in 2004. He faithfully served his country in the U.S. Navy. He loved to travel, spending time in Wyoming, Montana, Colorado, New Mexico, and Arizona.

Russell and Kristin had lived in the Oxford area for the past three years, moving here from Thermopolis, Wyo.

He was a communicant of Saint Catherines of Sienna in Norway. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 23 of Freeport; American Legion Post No. 112 of Oxford and DAV Chapter ME 1. During his military service he served on the USS Holland AS-32, USS Iwo Jima LPH -2 and on the USS Valdez.

He is survived by his wife, Kristin Elliott-Herbert of Oxford; three stepchildren, Jason Worthing of Westbrook, Keith Worthing of South Portland and Rachel Worthing of Saco; three brothers, Glen and his wife, Julie of Cape Elizabeth, Keith and his wife, Virginia of Florida and Raymond of Germany; and a sister, Melody Ruthier of New Hampshire.

He was predeceased by his parents; and also by his stepfather, Richard Manseau of New Hampshire.
