Mt. David Commandery, Knights of Malta of Lewiston, with Dames of Malta and friends as guests, had one of the best outings on Saturday that has ever been their privilege to attend. They left Auburn on a special car, took on more passengers in Lewiston, and arrived in the morning at New Meadows where three boats conveyed the party five miles down the river to Oak Ledge, where field sports were enjoyed. These included a 100-yeard dash, ladies’ foot races, broad jump, egg race, fat man’s race, fat ladies race, ladies long distance spoon throwing, and a baseball game. At this point in the program a shore dinner was enjoyed after which the guests entertained themselves in various ways.

“What a July this has been.” “Boy, am I glad this one is over.” This is probably the way many Twin City residents (and tourists, too) feel about this seventh month of 1962, but according to the records, and figures don’t lie, this month was pretty much the same as any other July. Rainfall during this month, although many think it was a wet month, was .77 of an inch less than the monthly average, which has been recorded for the past 87 years.

The way Postmaster Craig M. Carey tells it, Nancy Reagan’s planned visit to Agassiz Village in Poland Thursday is the biggest thing to happen to the town’s 4,000 residents since a P-3 Orion crashed there in 1978. The First Lade is scheduled to visit the Agassiz Village youth camp Thursday morning, driving right through the sleepy hamlet of West Poland. Carey and other residents say they palm to watch her motorcade proceed past the village’s center, which is all of a general store and a tiny U.S. Post Office. All joking aside, the 280 campers at Agassiz Village are taking the First Lady’s appearance very seriously. The majority of the campers, who range in age from 6 to 14, come from “disadvantaged families.” They are generally inner city youths, many from Boston.
