LIVERMORE — A new fireworks store is expected to open on Route 4, about 2 miles from Bear Mountain Variety in Turner, before Labor Day.

Co-owners of Patriot Fireworks, Jay Blais of Greene and Tim Bolduc of Turner, received site plan approval from Livermore Code Enforcement Officer Richard Marble on July 19, Livermore administrative assistant Kurt Schaub said Thursday.

The store will be in the former D & D Donuts building, which was most recently an auto body shop.

It will be the second fireworks store for Blais, 39, and Bolduc, 37. They opened Patriot Fireworks on Route 202 in Monmouth on May 12. Both stores are family operated.

The two have been friends for years. Both graduated from Lewiston High School.

They have done several business ventures together and have owned T & J Flooring for 12 years, Blais said.

“We’re hoping to be open before Labor Day,” he said.

The fireworks store will sell mortars, cakes, Roman candles, firecrackers, fountains and any other item that can be bought in Maine.

Maine legalized the sale, possession and use of certain fireworks Jan. 1. The law excludes missile rockets, helicopter and aerial spinners, sky rockets and bottle rockets. It also prohibits anyone younger than 21 from entering a fireworks store unless accompanied by a parent or legal guardian.

“We’ve owned a couple of other businesses and we’ve learned to just keep overhead down so we can pass the savings on to the customer,” Blais said.

The owners said they extensively test the products before selling them.

“You have to test the product and see what it does so we can tell customers how things work and how to make it safer,” Blais said.

They also have digital recording of the fireworks being exploded so they can show customers what to expect.

The Livermore store will be open seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. to start, Blais said.
