I was pleased the Sun Journal editorial board saw fit to call out the Androscoggin River Alliance on the foolish lawsuit they have waged against the Oxford Casino (July 26). That business has undergone more scrutiny than any project I can remember in the 20 years I have lived in Maine.
The votes were counted and recounted. The casino was built and is expanding. The remaining phases will be carefully considered by the appropriate agencies and thoroughly vetted. The Little Androscoggin River will never be in jeopardy from this project.
Sadly, the Little Androscoggin is all but impassable by boat from Route 117 in Norway to Oxford. I find it bitterly ironic that this group, dedicated to the river, chooses to spend money fighting against a project approved by a majority of the people, while the Little Androscoggin remains closed to paddlers and fishermen.
Maybe the people behind the suit should examine their mission statement and be more clear about their motives.
The casino referendum may have been a tight race but I’m sure the vast majority of Mainers see right through the ARA and recognize that type of environmental overreach that has stifled the state’s economy for too long.
