PARIS — Silas Gordon, a young, proficient artist, shared his amazing, detailed drawing of Meriwether Lewis’ dog, Seaman, with other Geo-Kids at the Paris Public Library.
Silas also shared many interesting facts about this Newfoundland dog who ventured with Lewis and Clark on their expedition on the Missouri River in the early 1800s on their way to the Pacific Ocean. It appears that, due to the less than perfect penmanship of Meriwether Lewis, Seaman’s name was really “Scannon.”
Silas has shared a myriad of his detailed animal drawings with Paris Public Library’s Geo-Kids throughout the last four years, including a life-sized anteater.
Silas is 11 and has been drawing all his life. He has been producing animal drawings for sale since he was 9 years old. A few of his pieces are on display at Well Point Veterinary Clinic in Norway. He takes orders to draw pets. Silas will be displaying at the Common Ground Fair on Sept. 21, at the Humane Society Craft Fair in Waterville on Oct. 27, and soon will have cards available at the Maine Wildlife Park in Gray.
In 2011, Silas donated more than $500 from proceeds of his sales to organizations that help endangered and injured animals.
Silas , from Oxford, is the son of Drexel and Julie Gordon and the brother of Rosemarie Gordon.
