LEWISTON — Raising nearly $101,000 at the annual Big Brothers Big Sisters of Androscoggin and Oxford Counties Bowl for Kids’ Sake fundraiser, it was a no-brainer that there were numerous people for the Community Concepts Big Brothers Big Sisters program to thank. On June 8, Big Brothers Big Sisters staff members hosted a Volunteer Appreciation Night, bringing together 80 community members, volunteers and Big Brothers and Sisters.

BBBS hosts the annual event in an attempt to share real life stories with those who provide support throughout the year. Honoring mentors of the year, key sponsors and top fundraisers, Big Brothers Big Sisters staff members aim to express gratitude to all who play a key role in the success of the mentoring program.

“It is so rewarding to see so many Big Brothers and Sisters in the room with their Little Brothers and Sisters,” said Kristen Soule, Big Brothers Big Sisters program manager. “It is a perfect way to show the public just what the program really does.”

Each year, the local agency recognizes two Mentors of the Year. This year, Diane Blanchard, Community Match Coordinator, presented the award to two Big Sisters who have gone above and beyond to show support and care towards their Little Sisters.

“I always love being able to watch the friendships grow with the matches. These two Big Sisters who we are recognizing this year, have truly been consistent supporters of their Little Sisters, as well as our program. The awards are truly deserved!”

The recipients were Joan Parker of Oxford County and Cindy Gelinas of Androscoggin County. Parker has been a mentor in the program for eight years; Gelinas has been a mentor for five years.

Hannaford Supermarkets received the Corporate Sponsor of the Year Award. Showing their support as a high level sponsor, as well as participating at the event, this award was well deserved. Hannaford manager Chris Farago accepted the award on behalf of the local store.

Oxford Networks was recognized for their continued support of the program. Participating in Bowl for Kids’ Sake, as well as supporting the volunteer recruitment campaign, Oxford Network has been a key player to the success of finding mentors for the youth on the waiting list.

The final award was granted to John Gouin, top fundraiser for the Oxford County Bowl for Kids’ Sake. Raising a total of $1,283, Gouin has become well known in the community for his strength in raising money for the organization.

Patricia Brennan, Oxford County Big Brothers Big Sisters staff member has known Gouin for years and has witnessed his fundraising skills. “John has worked so very hard for over 10 years supporting Big Brothers Big Sisters, but for the last three years he has really knocked it out of the park, raising over $1,000 each year! John has asked so many people to support Big Brothers Big Sisters that it feels to me like he is our own personal, goodwill ambassador.”
