DEAR SUN SPOTS: Here I am again dating myself with another inquiry. Again when I was quite young riding home from the ocean via Durham gazing out and seeing this gold dome in the distance. I believe it was a community called Shiloh. Stephen King mentioned it in one of his novels. Do the dome and Shiloh still remain? — Roberta Proctor, [email protected]

ANSWER: Sun Spots loves these questions, and the readers seem to as well, since they always draw many responses.

To get started, Sun Spots turned to Bates College professor emeritus Doug Hodgkin, who directed Sun Spots to a Wikipedia entry, where the following appears:

“Frank Weston Sandford (Oct. 2, 1862, to March 4, 1948) was the founder and leader of an apocalyptic Christian sect, informally called ‘Shiloh’ and eventually known officially as ‘The Kingdom.’ Sandford was early attracted to premillennialism, the Higher Life movement, the indwelling power of the Holy Spirit, and divine healing; and in the 1890s, he created a communal society in coastal Maine whose members ‘lived on faith’ rather than being gainfully employed. Considered by former members and many neighbors to be a crank and an autocrat who insisted on unquestioning loyalty, Sandford — who had identified himself with the biblical Elijah and David — was convicted of manslaughter in 1911 and served seven years in a federal penitentiary. His absence retarded the growth of his small sect, but it survived, in attenuated form, into the 21st century.”

Doug noted that the book “Fair, Clear and Terrible” is the basic work on this topic and is in local libraries. He also said he thinks most of the buildings are gone.

Readers, now it’s your turn. What do you remember?
