LOVELL — The folk-based Squid Jiggers, aka Dave Rowe and Troy R. Bennett, will perform Thursday, Aug. 9, at the Brick Church for the Performing Arts.

The two musicians/vocalists took their name from the A.R. Scammell song “Squid Jigging Ground,” a musical depiction of fishing for squid in the waters off Newfoundland.

They combine their talents on guitar, bass, bodhran and tin whistles.

Rowe learned the music trade literally at the feet of his father, Tom, while the elder Rowe traveled the country playing bass guitar with the folk group Schooner Fare. He began playing professionally as a bassist at age 15.

In 1993, the Rowe men formed a duo, which  became known as Turkey Hollow when Denny Breau joined. After Tom Rowe died in 2004, Dave formed the Dave Rowe Trio, with which he continues to tour as lead vocalist and guitarist.

With the formation of The Squid Jiggers, Rowe comes full circle, picking up his dad’s trademark Steinberger bass guitar and playing many of the songs Schooner Fare performed.

Bennett started his professional career touring with the Irish band Rakish Paddy of Portland. He later adopted the gypsy life, traveling Europe with his guitar, collecting stories and busking on street corners. He then studied Anglo-Irish literature at University College Galway and the University of Southern Maine.

Bennett started a Celtic duo called Bailey’s Mistake, as well as the Half Moon Jug Band, a high-octane folk group specializing in new uses for kazoos and banjos. The Half Moon Jug Band continues to tour New England.

The concert will begin at 7:30 p.m. at the church on Christian Hill Road. Tickets at the door are $10 for adults/$5 for children 12 and younger. For more information, call 925-1500 or visit www.lovellbrickchurch.org.
