NORWAY — Zakk Maher founded Square Root Natural Foods in Poland in 2009. Square Root is a company that focuses its mission on helping the greater community by providing healthy and environmental products.

Maher recently spoke to the Oxford Hills Rotary Club where he detailed why he is redirecting his energies to downtown Norway where he now works as a residential mortgage broker in the Western Maine Mortgage office located at 290 Main St.

“I am here because this is the type of community that values face-to-face conversations, and that is just how I like to work,” Maher said.

He is no stranger to the community. In the past he served on the board of the Western Maine Art Group and volunteered for the Bryant Pond 4-H camp and the Mahoosuc Arts Council.

He serves on the Community and Economic Development Committee for the town of Poland.

“I am not just here to work … I am here to be involved, any way I can, to help this community prosper,” he said.

For more than10 years Maher and his family hosted the Valhalla Fields Summer Arts Festival in Poland, which provided a weekend of free music, arts and entertainment for the approximate 500 attendees.

Though they have taken this year off from the event, he hints that there is more to come.

“In order to proceed with true growth and development, sometimes you just have to step back and catch your breath … both my family and I needed a break, but that doesn’t mean we are done.”

When asked why they started the event in the first place he said, “It incorporates everything we are passionate about. Fine arts, live music and hundreds of our closest friends and community members.”

He encourages people to stop by his office for a quick chat, whether it is about work, the arts or what can be done to help promote the Western Maine region on a larger scale.
