POLAND — A home on North Raymond Road was destroyed by fire early Wednesday morning while the renters were away.

Firefighters responded to a fire at 329 North Raymond Road just after midnight, according to Poland Fire Chief Mark Bosse.

The property is owned by William and Ivy Brown of Poland, according to municipal property assessment records.

“The call came in at 12:06,” Bosse said. “When we arrived we found a fire on the back side of the house.”

A portable pond was set up, but, according to Bosse, the blaze was fought using water directly from a small fleet of tankers brought to the scene.

The fire was declared officially out at about 5 a.m., Bosse said.

Bosse said damage to the interior of the structure was severe. “Probably they will have to gut it out to the shell.”

Bosse said he managed to contact the rental property’s occupants, who were away at the time of the fire, and they were assisting in efforts to determine the cause of the fire.

Investigators from the State Fire Marshall’s Office were also at the scene.

Joining Poland firefighters were contingents from Auburn, Casco, Gray, Mechanic Falls and Raymond.
