Fueling up

for cycling

LEWISTON — “Fueling for the Dempsey Challenge!” is the topic of an informational session set for Monday, Aug. 13, at Central Maine Medical Center.

Certified athletic trainer Greg Jancaitis from Central Maine Sports Medicine will discuss strategies for eating and hydrating for longer cycling events.

Jancaitis is a USA Cycling certified cycling coach whose clients range from racers looking to take their training to the next level to those getting into cycling for the first time. He is an avid bicycle commuter and competes in ultra-endurance mountain bike races.

“Fueling for the Dempsey Challenge!” will be presented free in Chairmen’s Room A on the lower level of the 12 High Street Medical Office Building.. Society elects

AUBURN — The Androscoggin Historical Society elected officers at its annual meeting in the Court Street Baptist Church vestry.

David Young is president; Doug Hall, vice president; Doug Hodgkin, recording secretary and newsletter editor; Bruce Hall, membership secretary; and Sue Sturgis, treasurer.

Board of directors members are Dot Bowyer, Russ Burbank, John Henderson, Michelle Kellis, Barbara Randall, Beverly Robbins, James Sargent, Marilyn Wilkinson and Betty Young.

Young introduced Joline Froton, the society’s new administrative assistant. Her background includes 27 years at Bates College, where she managed first its post office then the college store. A graduate of Lewiston High School, she has been active in a variety of local civic organizations.

David C. Garcelon presented a talk on “Alonzo Garcelon, 1813–1906: The Man and His Times.” A dinner was served by the women of the church. Music was provided by Four on a Match, a women’s barbershop quartet.

The society’s research library and museum hours are changing slightly. The office, located on the third floor of the Androscoggin County Building, is open Wednesday and Thursday from 1 to 4:30 p.m. and Friday from 1 to 4 p.m. and is accessible by elevator.

Volunteer training

LEWISTON — The Program for Grieving Children & Teens will hold 30-hour volunteer training for individuals interested in being part of the team for upcoming program sessions.

Training will begin Thursday, Aug. 16. It will include two Saturday sessions: Aug. 18 and 25 from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and four evening sessions: Aug. 16, 21, 23 and 28 from 5 to 8:30 p.m. Classes will be held at Androscoggin Home Care and Hospice’s office located at 15 Strawberry Ave.

The free training is designed to prepare interested participants in the art of volunteer work with grieving children and their families.

Volunteer opportunities include facilitating groups for children and adults, greeting or interviewing families, community outreach and office support.

Barn open house

POLAND — Dragonfly Farm, 382 Bailey Hill Road, will host an Open Barn from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 12, to showcase the Roux Camp, a program designed to educate people about horses.

Roux Camp is a hands-on learning program, not a riding program. Teaching from the ground up, it covers information based upon the students’ prior knowledge in horses.
