It is important to expand on President Barack Obama’s premise that the middle class taxpayers are the force behind successful businesses.

Taxpayers fund the research and development of the National Institutes of Health; it is the large pharmaceutical companies that take advantage of the spin-offs. Obama could have referred to NASA programs, funded by the taxpayers, that did the groundwork, but the high tech companies reaped the spin-offs. He could have referred to the Department of Agriculture, funded by the taxpayers, that does the research and it is the large agri-businesses that reap the benefits and also the subsidies.

The list could go on and on. It is the purchase power of the middle class that saves whatever is left of the economy.

Reading the national tax code, it is obvious how it benefits large corporations and wealthy individuals. It is riddled with exceptions and exemptions.

The president is right on target when he says that the middle class taxpayers are the ones who support the success of the large businesses. Without a solid middle class, many businesses would have to fold.

It is the solid middle class that is the foundation and the reason for the success of this nation.
