HARRISON — The Sebago-Long Lake Music Festival will present the final concert of its 40th anniversary season at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 14, at Deertrees Theatre.
“Russian Finale” will showcase the diverse works of four of the most celebrated Russian composers: Prokofiev, Khachaturian, Shostakovich and Glinka.
First on the program is Prokofiev’s Overture on Hebrew Themes for Clarinet, Strings and Piano. While living briefly in New York City to escape the turmoil and uncertainty of the Russian Revolution, Prokofiev was asked by some friends, also living in exile, to write a piece based on Jewish themes.
Since Prokofiev was not Jewish and had no knowledge of Jewish music, his friends provided him with a collection of traditional Jewish melodies. Intrigued by this music, he produced this overture, imbuing it with his sense of humor and use of tonal colors.
Next is the Trio for Clarinet, Violin and Piano by Khachaturian. Based on folk material, it is a piece full of movement and passion. The lively Armenian style for which Khachaturian is so well known will be on full display.
Shostakovich’s String Quartet No. 11, written in 1966, exemplifies the composer’s serious, dark side. It consists of seven short movements, instead of the more conventional three or four, but these movements are played without pause, so the intensity of the work never flags.
The final work, the Grand Sextet for String Quartet, Bass and Piano by Mikhail Glinka, will bring the audience back to the sun. A 19th century composer who studied in Italy for a time, Glinka combined western music forms with traditional Russian music.
As the first Russian composer to be known outside of his own country, he is recognized as the father of Russian nationalistic music. The Grand Sextet is an exuberant, jubilant work.
