RANGELEY — Police arrested a local woman after a passer-by noticed a car parked in the middle of Loon Lake Road late Wednesday.

When officer Jared Austin tried to get the woman to get out her vehicle, she pulled a canister of Mace and a Swiss army knife on him, police Chief Dennis Leahy said Friday.

Laurie Hunt, 49, was arrested early Thursday on charges of operating under the influence and refusing to submit to arrest, Leahy said. She was released on $200 cash bail the same day. She is scheduled to appear on Sept. 20 at a Farmington court.

Leahy said Austin responded to the 10:51 p.m. call and when he approached the car, he smelled a strong odor of an intoxicating beverage, he said.

Austin asked the woman to get out of the car. She fumbled with her keys and purse, he said.

He asked if she was drunk and she responded, “’Yes, clearly,’” Leahy said, according to Austin’s report.

When she turned, she had a small canister of Mace in her right hand and a Swiss army knife, Leahy said. Austin forcefully removed the Mace and knife and threw them onto the floor.

Hunt was taken to the Rangeley Police Station. She refused to sign to arrest summonses and was taken to the Franklin County jail in Farmington.
