In the Sun Journal Aug. 7 was an article taken from the Bangor Daily News. The headline was “Little evidence for governor’s claim,” written by BDN’s Robert Long.

It reported that Gov. Paul LePage continues to demonstrate his vast ignorance and profound stupidity, this time by inventing “facts” concerning Maine’s schools and the reputation of Maine students around the country, particularly with reference to college applications.

While that, in itself, is depressingly interesting, it is neither surprising nor, given the governor’s long record for public blunders, particularly newsworthy. It is just more of LePage performing as the dope and statewide humiliation that many people have come to know and scorn.

However, the reporter, Mr. Long, who ought not to be a dope or blunderer, committed a similar blunder in that very article, which neither the BDN editor nor the Sun Journal editor caught.

Long stated that William and Mary is “a private college in Virginia.” Actually, it is a university (though still called The College of William and Mary), and it is part of the public college and university system of Virginia.

That system includes UVA, George Mason, James Madison, Virginia Tech, Virginia Military Institute, Virginia State, Longwood, Mary Washington, Virginia Commonwealth, Norfolk State, Old Dominion and, yes, William and Mary.
