GRAFTON TOWNSHIP — A New Hampshire motorcyclist was flown to a Lewiston hospital via helicopter after a single-vehicle crash Monday evening in Grafton Notch State Park.

Daniel Rosa, 40, of Windham, N.H., was taken to Central Maine Medical Center with head injuries after the 6 p.m. crash on Route 26. He was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, according to authorities.

Information about his condition was not available Monday night.

Deputy George Cayer with the Oxford County Sheriff’s Office said a concerned citizen picked up Rosa and two friends riding with him at the time of the crash and took them to her Upton home to call emergency crews. Cayer said there was no cellphone service where the crash occurred.

Cayer said Rosa lost control of his 2006 Harley-Davidson motorcycle on a slight left-hand curve while traveling north on Route 26 in Grafton Notch State Park. Cayer said the two other motorcyclists traveling with Rosa witnessed the crash. He said it appears Rosa simply got off the shoulder of the roadway and hit large chunks of broken tar.

Cayer said the motorcycle was not traveling fast and only slid a short distance before coming to a stop. But it appeared Rosa hit his head on the large chunks of rock and tar, thus sustaining a severe head injury.

Cayer reported speed and alcohol were not considered factors in the crash. Route 26 was closed for a short period of time while Rosa was transferred from Pace Ambulance to LifeFlight from a landing area set up near Andover.
