The Grand Trunk Railroad depot in Lewiston is one of the most historic structures in the city. It has been on the National Register of Historic Places since 1979, yet the most distinctive feature of the building is being allowed to deteriorate — to fade away with weather and time.

Yes, I am speaking of the lovely and meaningful painted facade facing Lincoln Street.

What a wonderful reminder, not only of Lewiston’s history as the spot where many of Lewiston’s early citizens first arrived here, but also of the geographic location in relation to places far and wide.

What a shame to lose it.

It is too bad this little restoration was not required when current renovations were planned, but it is not too late for us to save this very visible signpost of Lewiston’s past.

Why can this not be a special project of Museum L-A and our thriving arts community, which owes so much and contributes so much to our revitalized downtown area? Why can’t we all participate, through donations and the civic organizations to which we belong?

It’s sad to drive by and see such a unique marker of local history fading away.

Let us restore it.
