RANGELEY —  In his report to the Rangeley Lakes Regional School Committee on Tuesday, Superintendent Brian Foster said this year’s preliminary enrollment stands at 185 students.

The meeting was the first for Pam Ellis as chairwoman of the board. She described her style as inclusive and said she wants to make sure that everyone has their chance to speak on any subject.

Chris Farmer of Sandy River Plantation replaced Rick Godaire as a member of the board.

The superintendent said the school’s audit began Tuesday and would continue for another two days.

Several maintenance items have been completed or nearing completion, including the installation of new windows, Foster said. Remaining projects include numerous painting jobs and replacement of the steps to the athletic field.

Principal Sherry Connally said she has begun interviews for the position of instructor in English as a Second Language, and will have candidates to present to the board at the next meeting.

Connally has also been on the phone with SAD 58 officials about workshop days, focusing on math and English Language Arts. The workshops will take place Aug. 28.

Stephen Dudley, the new head of the Finance Committee, said they had discussed the feasibility of renaming the committee the Finance and Budget Committee. They will continue exploring how to do this, and hope to have a good working knowledge of budget issues by the end of the year.

Currently, the Budget Committee duties are handled by the School Committee.

Dudley said they also discussed expanding the committee from four to five or more members.

“It would be a big step forward to have ground rules, and people on the committee level who can explain issues to the board at large,” Dudley said.

Chris Farmer said it would be good to have a timeline on the budget so staff would know when their input is due. Ellis requested that they bring specific proposals in writing on how to restructure the committee by the next meeting.

The Facilities Committee has no chairman, but Harold Schaetzle reported they are discussing priorities, including updating the science labs, the upkeep of buses and the possible replacement of the portable classroom with a permanent addition.

The interviewing committee has completed the searches for education technicians.  The board approved the appointment of Sarah Dorr for Ed Tech II and Katie Wuori for Ed Tech III.

The board also approved the appointment of Georgia Campbell as girls’ soccer coach, David Jensen as boys’ soccer coach, Tracy Cavalier as cheering coach, Danielle Ellis as middle school girls’ soccer, Tom Philbrick for middle school boys’ soccer, and Tim Straub as golf coach.

Connally said the Code of Conduct handbook has been printed and will be handed to students the first week of school. Letters have been sent to parents informing them that they can access all the handbooks on the school’s new website.
