One of the most stubborn pieces of work done  by the Auburn street department since the Gamage Avenue sewer was put in is the new sewer now being made on Upper Court and Harris streets. The distance where pipe is being laid is 800 feet and two-thirds of this has been through solid rock. Some 20 men have been at work on the job. They have been blasting and working for four weeks and it will take the best part of another week to complete the job. The job commenced on Court Street and extended up 10 feet and then 700 feet on Harris Street. The improvement was very much needed in that section and will add materially to the value of property. New houses will go up on Harris Street as one result. The cost will be in the close vicinity of $1,800.

Androscoggin County, with a gross product value of $170.4 million in 1961, was the third ranking county in Maine in this respect, according to the Census of Maine Manufacturers released this week by the Maine Department of Labor and Industry. Leading the 16 county list were Cumberland County, with a gross product value of $270.6 million, and Penobscot County with $213 million. It is interesting to note, considering that Raytheon is located in Lewiston, that the department says the electrical machinery industry has increased its value of product 78.3 percent from $13.6 million in 1960 to $24.2 million in 1961.

Slathering a hot dog with mustard is a far cry from Jeff Parshall’s regular job — driving a Lewiston police cruiser as a patrolman. But early on bright, sunny afternoons, 26-year-old Parshall can be found during his off-duty hours on the corner of Park and Pine streets in Lewiston’s Kennedy Park serving frankfurters to all comers. “I even sell my products to people I’ve arrested,” he said. They recognize that I’m a real person and not just a cop.”
