LEWISTON — Joseph E. Soychak, 88, of 12 Smith St., died Sunday, Aug. 19, at Central Maine Medical Center surrounded by his loving family. He was born in Lisbon, May 29, 1924, son of the late John and Mary (Pavelko) Soychak. He worked as an agent for the Central Maine and Canadian National Railroad for 40 years. He was a member of St. Patrick’s Parish until its closing in recent years.

Joe enjoyed hunting, fishing, and loved watching horse racing and sports of all types. Joe was very proud of the duck hunting camp he built (“Huska”) on Merrymeeting Bay. He also spent a lot of time in the Moosehead and Rangeley Lake regions, and had many fond memories of fly-fishing and hunting with his brothers. Joe was also proud of his Slovak heritage and enjoyed cooking traditional Slovak foods.

He is survived by his two daughters, Anne Schnitzer and her husband, Eric, of Lewiston and Jean Elie and her husband, Dana, of Lewiston; three grandchildren, Joseph, Jane and William; three brothers, Anthony, Francis and Thomas Soychak; and one sister, Bernadette Stewart.

Family was the most important part of Joe’s life.

He was predeceased by his loving wife, Harriette in 1994; his parents; his brother John; and his sister Agnes.
