100 years ago, 1912
William Grant, an elderly Auburn man, who resides on Road Street, was severely injured in a spectacular runaway accident Saturday forenoon and the two horses which he was driving sustained such injuries as may make them useless. The accident was caused by a bridle slipping off as the heavy truck team started down Cook Street Hill above Seventh and began to run. The loose bridle made it impossible for the man to hold them in the road, and he clung to the reins until the team struck a tree.
50 years ago, 1962
Androscoggin County Democrats today got away from their smoke-filled meeting rooms and took to the sunshine for the annual County Democrats’ outing at the No Name Pond summer home of the Montagnard Club. Official greeter, Mr. Democrat himself, Louis Jalbert, was on hand to keep matters under control and at dinner time reported that 400 persons had been on hand off and on during the morning and early afternoon hours. In fact, business was so good the barbecue pit at which he cooked couldn’t take care of all the hungry Democrats, and one Republican reporter (story bylined By R. Bruce Huntington), all in the first shift.

Central Maine Medical Center won preliminary approval Friday for a $19.3 million expansion project that will include a new wing, a 50-car underground parking garage and renovation work in 17 different departments. Hospital officials were elated by the news, which comes after more than seven years of work to get the project under way. “Our project clearly will make CMMC one of the most complete and well-equipped regional medical centers in the Northeast,” said hospital president William W. Young Jr.
