SARATOGA, N.Y. — Michael Gallant of Concord, N.H., graduated May 19 from Skidmore College with a Bachelor of Arts degree in geoscience.

He will teach high school geology and science for the 2012-13 school year in American Samoa, a U.S. territory which provides its access to America’s federal programs.

All of its schools have some Internet access, text books and school supplies. Cell phone coverage is also available.

In July 2008, World Teach in partnership with the Department of Education of American Samoa sent its first group to teach various subjects in elementary and high schools on the islands. The program has since grown substantially due to local support and demand. World Teach is the first volunteer organization to forge a relationship with the Dept. of Education.

American Samoa territory consists of 761 square miles of land, about the size of Rhode Island. It includes five volcanic islands and two remote atolls. It is located 14 degrees south of the equator, east of the International Date Line and Independent Samoa.

Michael is the son of former Rumford residents Michael and Christine Gallant of Concord, N.H., and grandson of Frank and Connie Gallant of Rumford.
