LEWISTON — The Navigators, one of Newfoundland’s most energetic Celtic groups, will make its first appearance in Maine this month with concerts.

The band will play the Franco-American Heritage Center in Lewiston on Tuesday, Aug. 28; Skye Theatre Performing Arts Center in Carthage on Wednesday Aug. 29; and Unity Center for the Performing Arts in Unity on Thursday, Aug. 30.

Formed in November 2000, the band plays original songs, a cappella, instrumental numbers, ballads and shanties. It has become one of the hardest working bands in the Canadian province and is now playing regularly in Nova Scotia and New Brunswick.

Making up the Navigators are Fred Jorgensen, tin whistles, bodhran and vocals; Arthur O’Brien, electric/acoustic guitars and vocals; Ian Chipman, bass and vocals; and Paul Murphy, drums.

Their debut CD, “Dance and Sing,” helped the band win the 2002 MIANL (Music Industry Association of Newfoundland and Labrador) Award for Roots/Traditional Group of the Year. In 2002-2003, The Navigators made several television and radio appearances, including ASN’s “Breakfast Television,” CTV’s “Canada AM” and CBC’s “Pay If Forward II, Benefit for Badger.”

Tickets are $15 at the door. Call 562-4445 for reservations at the Franco Center, 46 Cedar St., or Skye Theatre, 2 Highland Drive, Carthage; or 948-7469 for UCCPA, 42 Depot St., Unity.
