LIVERMORE FALLS — The RSU 73 Leadership Team has set Sept. 12 to get input from community members, staff, board members and students on creating a vision for the combined high school and the future of its students.
The session begins at 6 p.m. at Spruce Mountain High School in Jay with an open house, followed by the visioning forum at 7 p.m.
Social studies teacher and leadership team member Susan St. Pierre said the committee has been meeting twice a month for many months to study merging of the former Jay and Livermore Falls high schools, creating a common curriculum, improving SAT scores and creating a common culture.
“Bringing two high schools together requires more than saying that. Our goal is to create a vision that is bigger than any of us,” she said. “The vision will always be in our minds.”
Team member Eric Jewett said the merged high school needs a guiding principal.
“Why do we exist as a school?” he asked.
St. Pierre said the forum likely will be a session where attendees break into small groups and report ideas and recommendations at the end.
She said the Leadership Team will finalize the open house/forum schedule Aug. 30. The team meets at 2:30 p.m. every other Thursday.
Livermore representative Tim Madden volunteered to serve as the board member on the Leadership Team.
St. Pierre said the Leadership Team and staff will draft the visioning statement Sept. 20 and the board will be updated on that statement at its Sept. 27 regular meeting.
The vision statement, according to a release circulated by the Leadership Team, will serve as the standard by which all decisions are made.
RSU 36 in Livermore Falls and the Jay School Department merged last year. The goal is for all students from the former Livermore Falls High School and Jay High School to come under one roof in Jay by the beginning of school year 2013-14. The two high schools are now known as Spruce Mountain High School; Jay being the north campus and Livermore Falls the south campus.
