LEWISTON — Lyceum Gallery invites the public to the opening reception of Black and White, an exhibit in a variety of mediums. The reception is from 5 to 7 p.m., Friday, Aug.  31, and features 19 artists from many parts of Maine.

Black and White. We usually think classic, sophisticated, uncomplicated. Not always. This exhibit offers design and artistic interpretations on a color (or lack of color) theme that are edgy, dramatic, and surprisingly varied in color.

“Who knew that a theme of black and white would offer so much color variation?” said Tammie Grieshaber, owner and curator of Lyceum Gallery. “Ray Michaud is our exhibition design guru. Ray hangs exhibits that flow with the colors and shapes within the art work. Artists love to see what he will do with each exhibit. When we looked at all of the pieces for this exhibit, Michaud said ‘It’s so…black and white! Where do we start?!’ It did not take him long to figure it out, Greishaber said.

Michaud created an exhibit that is exciting and  colorful, Grieshaber said. He also created a special piece for the exhibit, QR #1. This is a large QR Code with a special message. (Quick Response Code is a matrix of black and white squares that can be scanned on a smart phone with a special QR reader that then reveals messages or images.)

Artists and their medium are:

Photography: Wendy Barrett, Len Bartel, Maureen Caron, Brenda Giasson, Martha Lentz, Daniel J Marquis, and Ellen Rawding.
