OXFORD — Grammy award-winning country artist LeAnn Rimes will perform at the Oxford County Fair next month at an admission price guaranteed to make no one blue.

A $5 ticket to the fair on Sept. 15 will include admission to the concert at 8 p.m. at the Oxford Fairgrounds off Pottle Road.

That’s a bargain, said Jackie Young, president of the Oxford County Agricultural Society.

Ticket holders to Rimes’ most recent concert on Aug. 25 with the San Diego Symphony at the Salk Institute in California paid a minimum of $250 to see the two-time Grammy Award winner, who has sold more than 40 million albums.

Rimes is known for such hits as “How Do I Live,” “Can’t Fight the Moonlight” and “Blue” among others.

“We’re all excited,” Young said.

The low ticket price, which includes all-day admittance to the fairgrounds on Saturday and an earlier concert with local favorite Motor Booty Affair, is part of the overall plan by the Board of Directors of the Oxford County Agricultural Society to bring the fair back to its agricultural, family-oriented roots.

Young said the society was able to offer the cut-rate ticket price for the concert because of an anonymous sponsor. She declined to identify the person or group responsible for the action, but also attributed the move to a communitywide effort.

With a goal to make the fair affordable across the board to both fair-goers and vendors, the directors made a number of changes to the fair this year, including shortening it from seven days to four. Other changes include reducing all admission prices to between $1 and $5 a day and charging $1 per ride for Smokey’s Greater Shows midway rides.

Vendors have been charged half the prices of last year, a new sign has been installed on Route 26 and there’s a new website, Young said. People seem to be responding.

“It’s really good. The community has really stepped up,” she said.

The Oxford Fair begins Wednesday, Sept. 12, with a focus on education for the expected 500 local students who will attend. Thursday is Senior Citizen Day ($3 admission for seniors) and Friday is Woodsman’s Day, along with the popular youth lamb and beef sale. Saturday is Family Fun and 4-H Day, culminating in the LeAnn Rimes concert.

In addition to Rimes, the fair’s other nightly entertainment begins Thursday with a performance by The Repeat Offenders, a rock and reggae group, the Time Pilots on Friday, and the disco-inspired Motor Booty Affair on Saturday.

The fairgrounds is at 68 Pottle Road, just off Route 26 in Oxford.
