As a teacher, a mother and a grandmother, I was very frustrated to learn that most baby food brands, including organic ones, contain BPA right in the packaging. I have tried to find a baby food that is BPA-free, but food labels do not even give that information.

My daughter made some of the baby food she gave her children in her own kitchen, rather that risk the effects of BPA-tainted food. I was encouraged, however, to learn that a proposal to ban BPA from baby and toddler food packaging will be heard by the Board of Environmental Protection in a public hearing on Sept. 6.

Maine has already phased out BPA from baby bottles, sippy cups and reusable containers. But BPA still leaches into food at hormone-disrupting levels linked to health problems such as prostate cancer and breast cancer.

If the proposed ban on BPA in baby and toddler food packaging becomes a reality, it will mean an important step in getting BPA out of the food supply.

I am asking all BEP members, candidates for state office and lawmakers in the Maine Legislature to pledge their support for getting BPA out of baby and toddler foods.

Now is the time to get this chemical out of our products so that all of our grandchildren can grow up in a world free of BPA.
