100 years ago, 1912
Jean Bruneau, 43, and Joseph Gregoire, 39, both of Lewiston, who were crushed by a falling derrick in the yards of the lower Maine Central, Tuesday morning, died at Ste. Marie’s Hospital within a few hours. The derrick was being used in connection with block and tackle to haul a string of cars, when a cable broke. The accident was witnessed by many people. The derrick has been used before for the purpose of hauling cars, when a shifter was not handy. Mr. Bruneau was the engineer. Mr. Gregoire was simply a bystander. He is a stonemason and was interested in the excavation which the railroad is making.

50 years ago, 1962
A lovely young actress from Hollywood did her bit for the Lewiston-Auburn United Fund today overseeing the presentation as local theatre managers made their donations to this year’s $215,000 drive. Flaming red-haired Sonya Cordeau, a former dancer with the Folies Bergere in Paris, who plays an important role in Universal-International’s current release, “Phantom of the Opera,” was the guest of the local United Fund.

25 years ago, 1987
At a recent meeting the Greene Bicentennial, planners discussed building a permanent cooking pit for beanhole bean suppers. Turner’s selectmen will be asked if Greene can borrow the bean pots used for the Turner Bicentiennial Celebration. Ron wing from the Monmouth Fish and Game club will cook the beans.
