FARMINGTON — William C. Chase, “Bill,” 84, of Carrabassett Valley passed on peacefully in his sleep with his wife, Louise, by his side in Farmington at Orchard Park Living Center, Sunday, Aug. 26, where he had been since March.
He was born June 18, 1928, in Bristol, N.H., to Custer Alex and Dorothy (Chard) Chase. He attended schools in Alexandria and Bristol, N.H. Bill married Fern Heath of Ashland, N.H., in 1954, and they resided in Laconia, N.H., and were the parents of Steven William Chase and Carole Fern Chase. Fern Heath Chase passed on Aug. 4, 1966. Bill later married Louise (Schmidt) Sargent of Franklin, N.H., in 1968.
Bill enlisted in the U.S. Navy in 1945, serving in the Pacific Theater. He participated in Operation Crossroads (Baker) on the USS Hughes. Bill was F2 on ships and the Island of Guam.
Upon discharge in 1949, he continued his schooling, graduating from NH Vocational Technical College as a machine designer, later obtaining an associate degree.
His first empolyment as a machine designer was at Scott & Williams Knitting Co. in Laconia, N.H. In subsequent years, he worked at Kidder Press in Dover, N.H., Hampton Machine Co. in Hampton, N.H., SHAPE in Biddeford and Kennebunk, Province Automation in Sanford, and as a land surveyor at G.L. Davis & Associates in Dover, N.H.
Bill and Louise resided in Dover, N.H., Lyman, and upon retirement in Carrabassett Valley. Bill worked as a PSIA certified Ski Instructor at Sugarloaf USA and in various capacities for Birchwood Interiors at Sugarloaf.
Bill and Louise were both avid sailors, hikers, and long distance bikers, enjoying many ocean trips on the Atlantic Ocean between Bar Harbor and Narragansett Bay and every port and island in between.
They have skied in New England, Canada, France, and Italy. They biked the New Hampshire, Maine, Massachusetts coast, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island. They hiked many mountains with their children; Bill and his son, Steve, achieving certification for AMC 4,000 ft. for N.H. Bill and Louise were Coast Guard Auxilliary officers and their sailing vessel Rainbow was a facility for the U.S. Coast Guard doing patrols and Search and Rescue as well as Courtesy Examinations.
Bill was a Christian with membership and participations in churches in First Parish Congregational in Dover, N.H., Goodwins Mills United Methodist Church in Lyman and Sugarloaf Area Christian Ministry in Carrabassett Valley serving in many capacities on ministry board, vacation bible school, etc. Bill was a United Methodist Certified lay minister and active with the Salem Economic Ministry.
Bill is survived by his wife, Louise; children, Steven Chase and his wife, Barbara, of Naples, Fla., and Carol Luca and her husband, Sal, of East Wakefield, N.H.; stepchildren, Christopher Scott Sargent and his wife, Ellie, of Tilton, N.H., and Lynn Sulloway and her husband, Ernest, of Franklin, N.H.; grandchildren; great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
