Isabella group met in August

RUMFORD — The Daughters of Isabella St. Timothy Circle 504 celebrated “Christmas in August” on Aug. 12 at 49 Franklin St.

The ladies enjoyed a meal and played games with money prizes awarded.

Committee members were Simonne Rafuse, Lorraine Barre, Viola Worcester and Marie Coffin.

Flower fest winners named

DIXFIELD — Highlights of the Dixfield Historical Society’s Festival of Flowers included the Peoples’ Choice award going to Cyndi Welch of Dixfield.

Welch also placed first in the cut flowers category for her purple lilies. Other winners included first place and Best in Show to Pamela Newton for her two-year-old coleus plant. First place in wildflowers was award to Becky Collins for a tall brown crock of cosmos, wild grasses and raffia; Charlotte Collins won first in the miniature bouquet category with a tiny arrangement of hydrangeas and fuchsias. Barbara Chow won the “Raffle for Her.”

The annual Antiques Road Show was also a wonderful success. The 50/50 drawing will be held in September.

Weekend horse shows

ANDOVER — The Ellis River Riders will be having two horse shows on Labor Day weekend, Sept 1. and 2. An open show will take place on Saturday with both English and Western events as well as halter and trail classes. Sunday will feature a game show with pole bending and barrel racing. Both events start at 9 a.m. ERR is on Airport Road, just off Route 5.

These events are free to spectators and there is free parking and plenty of bleacher seating. The Feedbag Foodbooth will be open both days for breakfast, lunch, snacks or homemade dessert.

Whitney Lodge open house

CANTON — Whitney Lodge 167 of Canton will hold an open house from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1. Hot dogs and drinks well be served, followed by a semi-public roast beef supper for the lodge’s ladies and widows. Robert Underwood will perform on the bagpipes following the supper.

Sammie Angel free concert

DIXFIELD — Dixfield will celebrate Labor Day with a free concert presented by Sammie Angel, owner of the Front Porch Restaurant. Well known for her presentations at the Village Green, local nursing homes and many other venues in the River Valley, she will present a two-hour program from 5 to 7 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 2.

Folks are welcome to arrive early and have a picnic on the green and are encouraged to bring folding chairs or blankets.

The concert is free to the public from all over the River Valley courtesy of the Dixfield Economic Development Council.

Region 9 enrollment

MEXICO — Region 9 Adult Education will have open enrollment and class sign-up for fall 2012 academic classes on Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, Sept. 4, 5 and 6, from 8 a.m. to noon.

Anyone interested in obtaining their high school diploma, GED or upgrading their skills is welcome to attend these sessions to enroll. Plan on spending three hours at the school to complete the necessary paperwork. Regular academic daytime classes will start Monday, Sept. 10, and the enrollment process needs to be completed before attending classes.

Region 9 Adult Education offers various levels of math, reading and writing classes to help individuals obtain their educational goals. The school is at 377 River Road. For more information call 364-2012.

Snowmobile club meeting

ANDOVER — Snow Valley Sno-Goers snowmobile club will hold a regular meeting on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 7 p.m., at the “hut”/clubhouse off Route 5. All are welcome to attend.

RUMFORD — The Lithuanian Heritage Club will meet at noon Wednesday, Sept. 5, at Sam’s Restaurant. This will be the final meeting before the Lithuanian Picnic, which will be held Sept. 15.

RPL preschool story time

RUMFORD — The weekly story times in the Rumford Public Library children’s room will resume on Wednesday, Sept. 5. Area youngsters ages 2-5 are invited to attend the preschool story times, which are held every Wednesday at 10 a.m.

Children who attend will enjoy stories, songs and activities, as well as make a take home craft that reflects that week’s theme. This is an excellent opportunity for parents to have their children meet and interact with other preschoolers. Story times will not be held during school vacations or in the event of school cancellations.

Storytime at Ludden

DIXFIELD — Preschool Storytime will be starting up again on Monday, Sept. 10, at Ludden Memorial Library. It will be held on Mondays from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

Participants will be reading a story, doing a fun craft and having a healthy snack. This program will run for the entire school year and will be following the same schedule as RSU 10. When school is cancelled due to weather, storytime will be cancelled also.
