Historical Soc. yard sale Sept. 1

MECHANIC FALLS — The Mechanic Falls Historical Society will be holding a fund raising yard sale from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 1, rain or shine.

Society members Jody and Judy McMorrow of McMorrow’s Auction Company have donated an interesting cache of household items, kitchenware, Christmas decorations, knickknacks, pictures and frames as well assorted odds and ends. There will be bargains galore since all items will be priced to sell so money can be raised to help to maintain the society’s home, the former First Congregational Church, at 64 Elm St., which was built in 1848.

History Barn open house

NEW GLOUCESTER — The monthly open house at the New Gloucester History Barn, Route 231, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 1, from 9 a.m. to noon. Temporary and permanent exhibits about New Gloucester will be on display. Free.

Farmers Market specials set

LEWISTON — Labor Day and Back to School specials will be offered at the Lewiston Farmers Market to be held Sunday, Sept. 2, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Bates Mill 5 municipal parking lot on Lincoln and Main streets.

Some of the deals include five lobsters for $20 with Luscious Live Lobster, reduced price hamburger buns with Lollipapa Farm and sandwich rolls with Pretzel Logic, $1 off bars of all artisan soaps with Mainely Soap, $1 lip balm from Hummingbird Farm and special deals on produce at various vendors.

To help out with back to school shopping the market will be raffling off three school bags complete with all the essentials a child will need for the first day of school plus some extra goodies from market vendors.

Labor Day celebration

LEWISTON/JAY — The Western Maine Labor Council will host two barbecues on Monday, Sept. 3, in honor of the Labor Day holiday. Union members, families, friends and community members are invited to celebrate workers and their accomplishments and to enjoy an afternoon of relaxation and fun together.

Council members have worked with local farmers and businesses to procure food for a barbecue which will include hot dogs, hamburgers, sausage and vegetarian options. A children’s area will provide face painting and performances by a magician. Gabriel Zacchai will perform live music throughout the afternoon, and Laura Fortman from the Frances Perkins Center will be the keynote speaker.

The main event will take place at IBEW Local 567 Union Hall, 238 Goddard Road, Lewiston, from 1 to 3:30 p.m.

A smaller satellite event will take place at the Steelworkers Union Hall at the intersection of routes 4 and 140 in Jay from 1 to 2:30. The Jay event will include food and socializing, but not entertainment.

Both events will take place rain or shine. The events are free and open to the public.

Benefit dance for Jim Roy

LEWISTON — A benefit dance for Jim Roy of Greene will be held from 7 p.m. to midnight Friday, Sept. 7, at the Elks Lodge on Lisbon Street.

Admission is $10 per person. There will be a social hour from 7 to 8 and a dance after with raffles ongoing through the evening. There will also be a silent auction for a short time throughout the night. Snacks and entertainment will be provided and all proceeds will go to the Roys to defer the cost of medical bills. Seed-saving workshop

LEWISTON — A workshop to be held from 6:30 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, will teach the basics of seed saving and which seeds are easiest for home gardeners to save. Participants will take home a sampling of saved seeds. Attendees who have seeds to trade or share with others should feel free to bring them.

The workshop will take place at the St. Mary’s Nutrition Center, 208 Bates St.

College planning workshop

LEWISTON — The Maine Educational Opportunity Center will be hosting a free workshop, “Essentials of College Planning,” for adults 19 and over at the Lewiston CareerCenter, 5 Mollison Way, on Wednesday, Sept. 12, at 10 a.m. To register or for more information, call 1-800-281-3703 or visit meoc.maine.edu.

MEOC is funded entirely by the U.S. Department of Education. The program helps qualified adults make the transition towards a college education.

All MEOC services are free. They include GED/SAT preparation, college planning, referrals/advocacy, career advising, financial aid advising, college admissions process and application fee waivers for qualified adults.

The starting point for all MEOC participants, the free interactive workshop outlines the four steps in the college process: admissions, financial aid, career planning and study skills. The workshop lasts approximately two to three hours. Preregistration is required.
